Did You Know?

  • Canola oil is pressed from tiny canola seeds produced by beautiful yellow flowering plants of the Brassica family. Cabbages and cauliflower are also part of the same botanical family!

  • Canola was bred naturally from its parent rapeseed in the early 1970s. Canola, however, is NOT rapeseed - their nutritional profiles are very different.

  • The word "canola" comes from the combination of four words: Canola-Oil-Low-Acid.

  • Europe has not adopted the term "canola" to differentiate canola from rapeseed - they call it Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed (LEAR) or Double-Zero Rapeseed.

  • On average, each canola seed is 42% oil. The remaining 58% is called canola meal and is fed to animals (such as cows, sheep, horses, chickens and pigs) because of its excellent nutritional properties.

  • One bushel of canola can produce up to 10 Litres of canola oil (based on average oil content and the most common method of extraction.)

  • The University of Alberta has created biodegradable plastic from canola oil.

  • Canola oil can be used in the creation of lipstick, lipgloss, soap, lotion, printing inks, biodiesel, de-icing agents, and so much more!
